I also want to give a shout-out to his assistant/tech Mary for the excellent before and after care -- I experienced no stinging at all after she washed the antiseptic thoroughly from my eyes. I am so grateful to the Retina Center for the great care I received Today, 5/14/25 I again saw Dr Pitcher and received helpful advice along with my shots. Today my tech was Angel, who is wonderful! The car she took with prep and aftecare left me with no stinging in my eyes, which was a relief because I had a second medical appointment a few hours later. With the amount of patients that go from El Paso to Albuquerque, surprised the heck out of me. Dr Golubev and Dr Thompson from the Retina Center were excellent. I met with Dr Golubev for my first vitrectomy appointment. He was very professional and direct. Dr Thompson performed the surgery and he was also very professional and amiable. His care was very comforting. His after-care instructions were complete and he answered all of my questions. The office staff were kind enough to schedule around my travel plans. I'm very satisfied with the surgery. In only one day my vision tested very well at my follow-up. The air bubble has diminished in size in less than 24 hours. I had a little discomfort the first night from staying in one position and took Tylenol. I also used a face-down pillow (not required for an air bubble) and it was a big help in keeping my eye (and the plastic cover) from pressing on my eye and outside my eye, and helped relax my other muscles. It also kept me from rolling around in bed and kept my upper body a little elevated (blood drainage going away from the eye). A little bruising the next day. Check-in process at the eye surgery center of Eye Associates of New Mexico is efficient, with friendly staff. My comments here are specific to the eye surgery center. The waiting room is clean and comfortable, with nice art on the walls. Professional staff collect basic health and medical info from patient at check-in, and usually do a quick vision screening evaluation soon after check-in, prior to seeing the doctor. After that, the wait time to see the doctor can vary from 10-20 minutes to 1-2 hours, in my experiences. Medical staff are very knowledgeable, very professional, respectful toward patients, highly skilled, and in my experiences, very clear communicators. I am very happy to have Dr Shaikh as my provider — very clear communication, very knowledgeable (his predictions of response to treatment were exactly as he had said), very professional & friendly in demeanor, respectful and attentive, and skillful with precision in surgery - which is why I have such a good outcome so far (along with the fact that I followed the doctor’s orders). Dr. Thompson was extremely busy, but took time to listen to my concerns and address them. I had not had anyone do that since I moved to Albuquerque and switched to the Santa Fe office. He went back and checked my Santa Fe records and got me an appointment with a glaucoma specialist which I should have been referred to a long time ago. I had cataract surgery by Eye Associates on both eyes and a more extensive “combo” surgery on one of my eyes due to macula and retina issues. I am absolutely thrilled with my results - including the more complicated eye !! I am now seeing with 20/30 and 20/50 vision with possible continued improvements!! For the first time in my life I don’t have to wear glasses or contacts. This is a game changer for me. Dr. Sheikh at Eye Associates of NM is very kind and knowledgeable. He did a great job of explaining to me what was going on, and he answered my questions in a way that I could understand without having any sort of medical knowledge/experience. Even though his office is extremely busy because of the lack of retina specialists in NM and the extremely high patient volume I did not feel like I was being rushed out the door, or like Dr. Sheikh was trying to get rid of me so he could see his next patient. His “bedside manner”, for lack of a better term, is very pleasant. I recommend getting an appointment as early in the morning as possible. That way your wait time won’t be the 2-4hrs that they tell you it will be. My appointment was at the beginning of the week at 7:40am and I was called back to the exam room by 8. UPDATED EXPERIENCE: Since Dr. Sullivan -Mees left this practice, I have been seen by Dr. Callahan, who is both professional and personable. She is easy to talk to, very thorough in her explanations, and also very kind. During my last appointment, I had a TERRIBLE time with the car service that was supposed to pick me up, and I ended up waiting 3 hours for it to pick me up, which was very disturbing, since I am disabled, mobility challenged, and blind in one eye, which makes me feel rather vulnerable. Dr. Callahan came up front to keep me company, along with one of the front office staff, and they made me feel as if I was not alone in my distress. She was in the process of arranging for an Uber to come pick me up (at their expense) but, fortunately, my car service came through before we had to do the Uber. They even gave me a little snack of apple juice and chips while we were waiting! So kind. The front office staff is also very kind and friendly. They're easy to talk to, and setting up appointments is a breeze. All of the technicians are gentle, professional and kind. Really, I feel lucky to be seen at this practice. They get high marks in every category from me. I will have to have a couple surgical procedures at this place eventually, and I feel confident in their professionalism and care for me, so I won't worry about those. When it comes time to do the cataract surgery and the eye lift surgery, I have no doubt that it will be alright at this medical practice. They exhibit an ideal combination of professionalism, kindness, concern for their patients, and FRIENDLINESS. Their office is fabulously clean, and the bathrooms are huge and disabled-friendly as well! I could not ask for more. PREVIOUSLY After long conversations with the clinic manager about some issues I'd had with Dr. Shaik, who'd behaved inappropriately and said some strange things to me, she arranged for me to change doctors and see Dr. Sullivan-Mees from now on. Dr. Sullivan-Mees was very easy to deal with. Low key, professional, and he quickly got me up to speed on what was happening with my condition. As he discussed the results of my scans, he pointed to the areas in question on the scan. Then we had a brief conversation about the approach we wanted to take at the moment. He shared his perspective. I discussed my needs and objectives. We arrived at a preliminary initial treatment plan that I was happy with. We will see how the disease is progressing in my case and then revisit where we are in another month. I also asked him what, if anything I could do to make a difference in my health and he was wonderfully forthcoming about that as well. I can't describe what a relief it was not to have to pull information out of a begrudging and truculent doctor focused more on how busy he is than the patient sitting in front of him. Instead, Dr. Sullivan-Mees gave me hope for the future. His calm, efficient and kind demeanor is very much appreciated. In addition, the support personnel are very nice - from the front desk people, all the way up to the clinic director. With respect to the folks who write reviews complaining about long waits, I would ask them to consider the fact that there USED to be three retina clinics in this town but we have just experienced a phase in which doctors have fled the state - heading for other states where their income and benefits are much better, leaving a giant hole in this state. One of those clinics closed, and now there are only TWO! My impression is that most everyone is doing the best they can to take care of the patients that have been left in the lurch. I won't defend the bad behavior of that one doctor, but even he gets some sympathy for this situation. People are scrambling to fill the void! I won't complain about the wait times and the occasional computer snafus because of it. I am giving 4 stars because the memory of that first doctor is still fresh in my mind, otherwise it would be a 5-star review. I am updating this 5 star review from last year, because this doctor and practice continues to be my favorite medical visit. Excellent people work at Eye Associates. They were all helpful and kind and friendly. Here is my previous review: I was extremely impressed by the office staff from reception to check out. They were all capable, competent and very pleasant. As I waited to be called back for my appointment, I heard them calling out to welcome each person entering the building and cheerfully walk them through the registration for the visit. The techs who worked on my eye assessment were equally reassuring, engaging and pleasant. They were profession and collegial and in this day-and-age I am so sorry that this top-notch staff is the exception. Eye Associates Retinal Center Today I met with Dr. Thompson for a second opinion and more knowledge on a surgery procedure prescribed and set up by another doctor at another facility two days earlier Because of Doc Thompson’s knowledge and clear explanation; I have now decided against the surgery on my own. Who wants surgery if it’s not absolutely needed. I was not feeling comfortable because the lack of information given to me by the other doctor at the other center. Compared to other providers in Albuquerque, this place is the best for older people and the elderly. Your needs and expectations are not ignored as they are so many times another places. These folks definitely are at the top of the Nice List. Santa and I will definitely be back. I had an 8:30 appointment. I arrived a few minutes early, I was checked in within 2 minutes. They called me back within 5 minutes to see the technician. It took about 15 minutes to test my eyes, dilate, do the scans. I waited a maximum of 5 minutes in the next treatment room to see the doctor. She informed me exactly what she had seen on the scans, explained every detail of what she saw and what the next step was. It may have taken a bit of time to get into see Dr. Vroman but I am so happy I waited. He was thorough and was not quick to jump to surgery. He evaluated my eye issues and checked every possible reason for the droopiness I experienced. In the end, we had to surgically repair and I am so pleased. I do not have issues anymore with end of day droopiness and feel so much more confident. People would comment about my eye prior to the surgery all the time and I am so happy it is no longer the subject of conversation. My eyelash tech and esthetician were shocked at how minimal the scarring was. They always applaud his work because they can barely see it. Dr. Vroman's staff provided instructions prior to surgery on how to manage the swelling/bruising after the surgery. I followed the instructions completely with taking recommended supplements, using ice/heat as recommended. The swelling/bruising was minimal and I was back to normal within a week. I want to specifically discuss my exceptional experience with Dr. Craig Vroman, an occuloplastic surgeon with NMEA.I first met Dr. Vroman in November of last year (2021) for a chronic chalazion (stye). Dr. Vroman was so kind in his bedside manner, gave clear explanations and offered several options for treatment. What impressed me most was his willingness to be conservative. As a fellow healthcare provider, often we see the most aggressive treatment offered, but Dr. Vroman steered away from this and offered pros and cons for the options he presented.I received same-day care from him and his wonderful technician (this was absolutely amazing) and within several days, while carefully following his post-operative instructions, I saw positive results. Dr. Vroman also offered me a post-operative appointment 6 weeks after treatment, which I felt further demonstrated his care and concern for patients.At my post-operative appointment, he never made me feel rushed, carefully checked my eye and lid, and discussed further treatment recommendations. I went to Sandia Vision and the doctor there was a nightmare. He was too lazy to even write down the condition he said I had so told me to take a picture of his computer screen and I can google it. I went to eye associates for a second opinion and the first doctor I saw was amazing and wouldn’t give me a diagnosis without being positive so she referred me to the retina center where I saw Dr. Chiu who is absolutely incredible! I drive over 3 hours to Eye Associates Retna Center because of the consistent and excellent care! I see a specialist regularly and appreciate the care and compassionate doctors and staff. They have gone out of their way to make me as comfortable as possible. They have also accommodated me in my appointments to minimize the number of visits I need to make due to the distance I have to drive. Today I had one of the worst days I could have possibly had since I became a mother. My daughter is 19 months old and was throwing a huge fit. It was the first time she had ever done anything like that so I didn’t know what to do. I’d take her outside, get her to calm down, but nothing seemed to work and I couldn’t leave because the woman I brought was getting an injection so I felt overwhelmed and embarrassed. I started to cry and just sat in the corner next to the check in area and tried to gain my composure but I just couldn’t. The women who worked there were beyond amazing! I can’t believe how nice they were. I forgot my daughters bottle so that was a huge reason for her fit, but they brought her snacks, they took us to our own personal waiting room, and gave her something to color on! Not only did they make me feel like this happens to us all, but they calmed me down and checked on us periodically till it was time to leave. Then when it was time to leave, a woman helped me to the car, cause the woman I brought is elderly and requires my attention. She helped me get her into the car and made sure I was okay! Almost 30 years ago, Dr. Reidy repaired torn retinas of both eyes (cryopexy). I came in every year for the first 5 years, then every two years since. He saved my eyesight, and I am forever grateful.
